Monday 19.02.2024 – Friday 23.02.2024
After exploring the island for 3 whole days, we switched hostels to the assava diving resort. regristration was really easy and they had place for us spontaniously. We shared a bunkbed room again with some young english blokes.
The first diving degree you do is called “open water” and can be done in three days and contains learning about the diving theory, learning using the gear in a pool firstly and then on several dives in the ocean up to 12 meters deep.
Our diving instractor was Megan from England, a really nice girl and she was assisted by Julie from Norway. On the first day we did some theory together and tested the whole diving gear at the pool. It was a long day in the sun / pool.
We had no real problems with learing the basics, Megan was pretty happy with our performances. We learned the basic hand signs and how to controll ourselves and the gear underwater.
The day after we went to the sea with a diving boat for our first real dive. The boats are run and driven by burmanese people. They do all of the heavy work in Thailand.
The visibility on that dive sport was not the best. I had some difficulties with equalizing my ear preassure but after some time it did work to go down to 12 meters.
Megan tested us on some of the manovers we learned in the pool which worked out well. Afer about 30 min we ascended again and drove to the next diving spot of the day where we had a second dive with better visability tho. When we returned to our resort, we washed our gear and called it a day, had some drinks and some food and went to bed tired from a good first real diving day.
Our last day for our open water degree started at midday for our last two dives. On those dives we finished our know how tests and had some fun dives, where we saw a stingrai and a big fishswarm, which surrounded us. One of the most memorable moments so far on my journey i must say.
At the end of the day we all had our open water degree, which now let’s us go diving individually up to 12 meters deep.
The next 2 days Timon and Joel did the advanced diving degree, but for me it was enough. I had a relaxed day and went out with the english group from our room, which was a blast. We also had some late night Pad Thai from a local bar which was really good.
We were all really happy with our stay at the diving resort. On the 23. we said goodbye to our first island experience in Thailand.
I really liked Koh Tao, it’s really small, you get from one end to the other in like 15 minutes and we saw some really nice places and viewpoints.
Im also glad we decided to do the diving, was a new experience for me which i liked over all.
On my next blog post ill wrapp up what happend in Kho Phangan and Koh Samui.
Enjoy the rest of the footage from Koh Tao.
